Youth Mobility Scheme Ballot: How It Works, Dates, and How to Enter

Not everyone applies for the UK Youth Mobility Scheme the same way. If you're from India, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, there's a step before the visa application itself: a random selection ballot. Only applicants who win the ballot are invited to apply.

This matters more than most guidance makes clear. The ballot isn't a formality — for India, selection odds are approximately 1 in 17 applicants overall, not a guaranteed per-round rate. Understanding exactly how the ballot works, when it opens, and what happens after selection is what separates prepared applicants from those who waste a slot due to procedural errors.

Which Countries Use the Ballot?

In 2026, three nationalities require a ballot:

Australia (38,500 places), Canada (10,000), New Zealand (8,000), South Korea (5,000), Japan (6,000), and several smaller countries do not use a ballot — their quotas are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The ballot for India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan exists specifically because demand substantially exceeds supply. With 3,000 YPS places in 2026 across two rounds and high applicant demand, random selection is the Home Office's mechanism for fair allocation.

When the Ballot Opens: 2026 Dates

The ballot typically runs twice per year — in February and July. Each window is open for 48 hours.

For the February 2026 cycle:

• Hong Kong and Taiwan: Window opened at 00:01 on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, and closed at 00:01 on Thursday, 12 February 2026
• India YPS: Window opened at 14:30 IST on Monday, 17 February 2026, and closed at 14:30 IST on Wednesday, 19 February 2026

For the July 2026 cycle:

• Hong Kong and Taiwan: Window opened at 00:01 local time on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, and closed at 00:01 local time on Thursday, 16 July 2026
• India YPS: Window opened at 13:30 IST on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, and closed at 09:00 IST on Thursday, 23 July 2026

How to Enter the Ballot

Hong Kong and Taiwan

The ballot is entered by email. You send a single email to the Home Office during the open window. The subject line format is strictly specified and must follow this exact pattern:

Last Name First Name – DD/MM/YYYY – Passport Number

Example: Chan Alice – 15/05/1996 – K12345678

The email body must include:

• Full name
• Date of birth
• Passport number
• Mobile phone number

Submit to the relevant address: TaiwanYMS@homeoffice.gov.uk for Taiwan or HongKongYMS@homeoffice.gov.uk for Hong Kong. The email must be in English and the body must include the full name, date of birth, passport number, and mobile phone number. Do not submit multiple entries — only one entry per person is permitted. Duplicate entries are not counted.

Formatting matters more than it should. Applicants have been disqualified for using the wrong date format, misplacing the dashes, or including additional information not listed. Follow the template exactly.

India YPS

The India ballot is entered through a dedicated online portal on GOV.UK, not by email. During the 48-hour window, applicants visit the portal and submit their personal details. The portal typically requires:

• Full name
• Date of birth
• Passport number
• Contact details

One entry per person. The portal may crash under load during the first hours of the window — this is expected. Refresh and retry rather than submitting multiple entries.

What Happens If You're Selected

Successful applicants receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) via email within 2 weeks of the ballot closing.

Once you receive your ITA, you have 90 days to:

1. Complete the full online visa application form
2. Pay the visa application fee (£340) and Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,552 for two years)
3. Provide biometrics (at a Visa Application Centre or via the ID Check app, depending on nationality)

Missing the 90-day window means losing your slot. There is no stated extension or deferral; you must wait for a future ballot and hope to be selected again.

Preparing Before the Ballot Results

A critical mistake many applicants make: waiting until after they receive an ITA to start gathering documents. The 90-day window sounds long, but assembling documents takes time:

India YPS applicants specifically need:

• Ecctis (formerly NARIC) statement of comparability for their degree — Ecctis assessments commonly take 15–20 working days and cost money. If you wait until after selection, you may spend a substantial part of your 90-day window on this step alone.
• The police clearance certificate required by current India YPS guidance — for Indian applicants, this means a clearance certificate from Indian authorities, which can take several weeks through official channels.
• TB test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic if you will stay in the UK for 6 months or more, have lived in a listed country for 6 months or more, and lived there or another listed country within the last 6 months

Hong Kong and Taiwan applicants need:

• The documents specified in the Invitation to Apply and current application guidance

The smart approach is to begin gathering all of these documents before the ballot — ideally in the weeks leading up to it. That way, if you're selected, you can complete the application within 30–45 days rather than scrambling to the deadline.

What Happens If You're Not Selected

The ballot is random. Not being selected says nothing about your eligibility — it's purely a numbers game. If you're not selected in the February cycle, you can enter again in July. Both cycles are separate draws.

For India YPS, 3,000 places are available in 2026. Selection odds are approximately 1 in 17 applicants overall, not a guaranteed per-round rate. Over multiple attempts, your cumulative odds improve — but there's no guarantee.

Some applicants enter both the February and July ballots in the same year. This is permitted. If you're selected in February and apply, you cannot then claim a July slot as well — but if you entered both and only the July ballot draws your name, that's your one selection.

After the 90 Days: Standard Processing

Once you've submitted your application and biometrics, standard processing takes approximately three weeks. Priority (five working days, £500 extra) and super-priority (next working day, £1,000 extra) services are available if you need to enter the UK by a specific date.

Your visa start date is the date you actually enter the UK — the two years run from entry, not from approval. You have 90 days after visa approval to enter the UK.
