UK Spouse Visa from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and USA: Country-Specific Requirements
The UK spouse visa requirements are the same regardless of nationality — £29,000 income, genuine relationship, English language, adequate accommodation. But where the application is submitted from makes a significant practical difference. Visa Application Centre availability, TB test requirements, specific document conventions, and processing patterns vary considerably between countries. Here is what applicants from the four most common source countries need to know.
UK Spouse Visa from India
India is one of the highest-volume UK spouse visa source countries, and applications from India face specific practical constraints.
TB test: A test is required where the applicant intends to stay in the UK for six months or more, has lived in India (a listed country) for six months or more, and was living in India or another listed country within the last six months. The test must be done at a Home Office-approved clinic — not a general GP or hospital. Use the current Home Office-approved GOV.UK clinic list; Delhi and Mumbai are examples of listed locations. The certificate is valid for six months from the date of the chest X-ray and must still be valid when the application is submitted. Book the test at the right point in your application timeline — getting it too early means it expires before you can submit.
Visa Application Centres: Use the current GOV.UK instructions for the overseas VAC; it may be operated by VFS Global or TLScontact. Appointments are available in major cities. Demand is high; book as early as possible after submitting the online form and paying fees. Wait times for appointments can run several weeks.
English language: Indian nationals are not exempt from the A1 SELT requirement (India is not a majority English-speaking country for UK visa purposes). The certificate must be from an approved SELT provider — IELTS Life Skills A1 is the most commonly used.
Marriage certificate: Indian marriage certificates must be issued by the official registering authority. Certificates from state-level registration offices are generally acceptable. Marriages registered under the Special Marriage Act or Hindu Marriage Act are both recognised, provided legally registered. Religious-only ceremonies without civil registration are not valid for UK visa purposes and must be supplemented with the official registration certificate.
Biometrics and documents: Follow the current VAC instructions for uploading or submitting supporting documents. Documents not in English must be translated by a certified professional.
UK Spouse Visa from Pakistan
Pakistan consistently generates a high volume of UK spouse visa applications, and applications from Pakistan receive particularly close scrutiny.
TB test: A test is required where the applicant intends to stay in the UK for six months or more, has lived in Pakistan (a listed country) for six months or more, and was living in Pakistan or another listed country within the last six months. Use the current Home Office-approved GOV.UK clinic list; approved locations checked include Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Mirpur. The certificate is valid for six months from the chest X-ray date and must still be valid when the application is submitted — time the test correctly.
VAC: Use the current GOV.UK instructions for the overseas VAC; it may be operated by VFS Global or TLScontact. Appointment availability varies significantly; book immediately after online submission.
English language: Not exempt — A1 SELT required. IELTS Life Skills is widely available and used.
Relationship evidence: For applicants in arranged or recently formalized marriages, the Home Office expects a clear chronological narrative in the cover letter explaining the timeline of the relationship from introduction to marriage. Evidence of family involvement, the marriage ceremony (dated photographs identifying key family members), and any visits between the couple before and after marriage are important. The caseworker will be looking for a coherent relationship story, not just a marriage certificate.
Previous visa history: Any previous UK visa refusals must be disclosed on the application form. Failure to disclose a previous refusal while simultaneously submitting a passport that shows the refusal stamp will be assessed differently from an innocent administrative error, but it should still be addressed directly — do not leave the caseworker to discover it without context.
UK Spouse Visa from Nigeria
Nigeria is the primary West African source country for UK spouse visa applications.
TB test: A test is required where the applicant intends to stay in the UK for six months or more, has lived in Nigeria (a listed country) for six months or more, and was living in Nigeria or another listed country within the last six months. Use the current Home Office-approved GOV.UK clinic list; approved locations checked include Lagos, Abuja, and Benin. Book early — appointment availability at approved clinics can be limited.
VAC: Use the current GOV.UK instructions for the overseas VAC; it may be operated by VFS Global or TLScontact. Lagos and Abuja are the main locations.
English language: Nigeria is not listed as a majority English-speaking country for UK visa purposes. A1 SELT is required. This surprises some Nigerian applicants who are native English speakers — the requirement is about the tested standard regardless of linguistic background.
Document authentication: Nigerian civil registry documents including marriage certificates and birth certificates are frequently scrutinized. Ensure your marriage certificate is officially issued with the relevant state seal. Documents in doubt should be accompanied by additional evidence confirming their authenticity.
Criminal record history: Nigerian police clearance certificates are sometimes requested as part of suitability checks, particularly for applicants with any previous immigration or criminal history flags. The standard application does not require a police clearance, but be prepared for the possibility.

UK Spouse Visa from the USA
Applications from the USA have a distinct profile from the above. The primary difference is that US applicants are generally exempt from several requirements that apply to other nationalities.
TB test: The requirement is based on residence, not nationality. A US national does not need a TB test merely because they are American, but a test may be required if they have lived in a listed country for six months or more and were living in that listed country or another listed country within the last six months, while intending to stay in the UK for six months or more.
English language: US citizens are exempt from the SELT requirement. The USA is explicitly listed as a majority English-speaking country, so no language test certificate is needed at any stage of the partner route (initial entry, extension, or ILR).
VAC: Use the current GOV.UK instructions for the overseas VAC; it may be operated by VFS Global or TLScontact. Locations are available in major cities. Wait times are generally shorter than in India, Pakistan, or Nigeria.
Income and financial evidence: US applicants where the sponsor is in the UK face the same financial requirements as all other nationalities. But where the US-based applicant is the one with income before moving (i.e., the applicant has US employment income), that income only counts toward the financial requirement for in-country FLR(M) applications (where joint income can be used), not for out-of-country entry clearance where only the UK sponsor's income is counted.
Marriage certificate: US marriage certificates are issued at the state level by county clerks or equivalent registering authorities. Apostille certification is not required by the Home Office, but the certificate must be an official certified copy — not a photocopied version of the original. For marriages in states with electronic registries, a certified printout with an official seal or signature is accepted.
Social media and online relationships: The Home Office does not maintain special scrutiny of US applicants in this area, but the genuine relationship test applies universally. For couples who met online and have limited in-person history, the same structured relationship evidence approach applies — mutual visits evidenced by stamps and boarding passes, communication logs showing ongoing contact, and a cover letter addressing the nature of the relationship's development.
Applying from Abroad: The Process Is the Same
Regardless of country, the out-of-country application process follows the same steps: online form via Gov.uk, fees paid online, biometric appointment at the relevant VAC, then processing of approximately 12 weeks from the biometric appointment.
